The story of Rockingham House
Rockingham House has stood on Bennetthorpe for well over a century. It began life as the Rockingham Inn — a roadside inn on the way into Doncaster, offering refreshment and “good stabling” to travellers, and pictured here in the days when trams still ran along Bennetthorpe.
In time the inn grew into the grand Hotel Rockingham, its stone frontage becoming one of the most recognisable buildings on the road. For many years afterwards it was well known locally as the Rockingham Arms — the photograph from December 1988 shows licensees Paula and Dave outside.
Today the building has been carefully converted into Rockingham House: a collection of comfortable, well-maintained apartments that keep this landmark, and its place in Doncaster’s history, in good hands.
